Recent Comebacks: Girls’ Generation’s New Look!

The Comeback as new unit Oh!GG

The legendary K-Pop girl group, Girls’ Generation, also known as SNSD, has made a long-awaited comeback with the already hit single, “Lil Touch.” The comeback was highly anticipated as “Lil Touch” exists as the first time the girl group promotes as a five-member unit group Oh!GG. The previous eight-membered group returns with the five-member: Kim Taeyeon, Im Yoona, Kwon Yuri, and Sunny Lee since former members: Tiffany Hwang, Seo Seohyun, and Choi Sooyoung decided not to re-sign their contracts with S.M entertainment. Wondering how the immensely popular group would perform as five-members, the girl’s comeback was highly anticipated by fans.

The Song

Girls’ Generation/ Oh!GG’s company, S.M Entertainment, describes the new single “Lil Touch” as an “up-tempo pop song with an addictive chorus and intense rhythmical and dynamic composition from the beginning of the song” (S.M Entertainment). The single strongly highlights each members personality and strengths. To illustrates, the song showcases Taeyeon and Sunny’s powerful vocals, Yoona and Yuri’s charming tone, and Hyoyen’s rapping abilities. The single contains lyrics that describes the “playing hard to get” relationships between two people as the girls sing words such as “continue to play games” and “I won’t be caught easily.”

Personal Review

Listening to “Lil Touch,” I thought the song was a perfect fit for Girls’ Generation’s return as a newly five-membered group. The song really illuminates the member’s strong points which ultimately creates great results when combined. To be honest, I was hesitant about whether or not the song would flourish with the group losing lead vocalists Tiffany and Seohyun,; however, I believe Tiffany and Seohyun’s absence created an opportunity for Sunny’s vocals to shine. In an article “Sunny Finally Gets Her Time To Shine In SNSD-Oh!GG’s ‘Lil Touch’ MV,” the writer states that “With ‘Lil Touch’, Sunny’s vocals in the pre-chorus are deep and impressive, showing a different side to the singer that fans may not have many opportunities to see in the past” (Koreaboo). I definitely agree with the article’s statement about Sunny as I always felt that some members never got to shine as bright as the group consisted of 8 members. Some comments on Sunny’s part in the new single from viewers on Youtube:

Not only did I feel that Sunny excelled in “Lil Touch,” but Hyoyeon as well. As the rapper of the group, Hyoyeon already has the shortest amount of lines; however, in “Lil Touch” Hyoyeon gets an immense number of lines and screen time and I absolutely love it. Hyoyeon has always shared her rap lines with fellow members in the past, but in the new single, Hyoyeon really shows her skills in her vocals.

Moving onto the music video, I really enjoyed its overall visuals. The music video was vibrant in colors and the clothing of each member suited the song and member well. Girls’ Generation has been a group since 2007 and the members are all grown up now. As the members are reaching their 30’s, I anticipated a much more wardrobe choice from the stylist and I was not disappointed. The black jumpsuits and long mesh skirts emerge elegant, mature, and appropriate for their age. I think the comeback costumes is better suited for the members than the group’s past comeback with “Holiday,” as they were dressed in puffy dresses and crazy hairstyles. I am definitely not claiming Girls’ Generation members as old, I am merely stating that I think that their older age against new rookie girl groups can work as an advantage towards them.

Overall, “Lil Touch” could not be a more perfect song for the new unit Oh!GG as the single successfully showcases the member’s individual colors and talents. I think the group will go far as a five-member group and will only grow from here. I can’t wait to see what else Oh!GG will release and promote!

Have you all watched the legendary girl group’s new music video? If so, comment your opinion on what you thought of the comeback! Did you like the girl’s new concept? Do you think Sunny got her chance to shine in this comeback? Tell me your thoughts! I would LOVE to hear from you all!
